Does a love triangle between Spider-Man, Donnie Darko and Queen Amidala sound out of this world to you? If so, you’ll be game for Jim Sheridan’s war drama
Brothers starring Tobey Maguire, Jake Gyllenhaal and Natalie Portman. Maguire plays Sam, a dedicated family man who has two daughters with his high school sweetheart, Grace, played by Portman. As Sam is shipped off for another tour of duty, his bad-boy younger brother, Tommy (Gyllenhaal), is released from prison and is happy to fill in for Sam at the homestead. When Sam’s helicopter is shot down overseas, Sam is captured and held prisoner but is presumed dead back home. Grace and Tommy start to mourn in mysterious ways until Sam finally comes home from war to start a domestic conflict after he discovers how uncomfortably close his wife and brother have become.
Lionsgate brings this love triangle home on March 23 on both DVD and Blu-ray. Detailed specs have yet to be revealed, but the discs will contain two featurettes and a commentary track by Sheridan. The film is based on Susanne Bier’s 2004 Danish film of the same name, so we expect at least a nod to that movie or Homer’s classic poem The Odyssey, on which both of the movies are based. Tobey Maguire received a Golden Globes nomination for his performance as Sam, so we’ll see how much love hurts the Academy when the Oscar nominations are announced next week.
