Official 'Resident Evil 5' Plot Synopsis Makes Mind-Blowing Claims

Jan 11, 2012

Everyone has a set of films that they enjoy despite knowing full well that they shouldn't. For me, that's the Resident Evil series. "Guilty pleasure," isn't even the right term, because there's no guilt involved. I don't feel remorse for liking them, but four films in and I can no longer defend actually liking them, either. Every fiber in my cinematic being knows they're goofy, silly, nonsensical films, but damn it all, do I look forward to each new time Milla Jovovich delivers an impossible, acrobatic kick to the head of some horribly mutated canine.

Well now Screen Gems has released the official plot synopsis for the fifth entry in the franchise, Resident Evil: Retribution, and even I, an unapologetic fan, am already groaning, rolling my eyes at its bold claims of "mind-blowing revelations." But, hey, it wouldn't be a new RE movie if it wasn't full of wacky twists and turns:

The Umbrella Corporation’s deadly T-virus continues to ravage the Earth, transforming the global population into legions of the flesh eating Undead. The human race’s last and only hope, Alice (Milla Jovovich), awakens in the heart of Umbrella's most clandestine operations facility and unveils more of her mysterious past as she delves further into the complex. Without a safe haven, Alice continues to hunt those responsible for the outbreak; a chase that takes her from Tokyo to New York, Washington, D.C. and Moscow, culminating in a mind-blowing revelation that will force her to rethink everything that she once thought to be true. Aided by newfound allies and familiar friends, Alice must fight to survive long enough to escape a hostile world on the brink of oblivion. The countdown has begun.

So, it sounds like we'll be in store for a lot of flashbacks which is good for two reasons. First, that explains how Michelle Rodriguez is being brought back into the fold. Second, it means maybe we'll return to a time when Alice wasn't a superhuman zombie killer -- you know a franchise has gone a bit off the deep end when flashbacks promise to be a nice change of pace.

Resident Evil: Retribution opens September 14th, 2012. If you're dying for more than just a plot synopsis, though, Jovovich revealed via twitter that the first trailer for the film should hit online January 18th before appearing in front of Underworld: Awakening.
