Nu to Blu: Bad Boys, Aliens, Cats & Dogs and a Live Community Screening of Sherlock Holmes with Robert Downey Jr.

Mar 25, 2010

This Thursday’s high-def headlines: If you plan on picking up the new Sherlock Holmes on Blu-ray on March 30, be sure to register online for the Live Community Screening (LCS) with Robert Downey Jr. on April 1. At 9 PM ET Warner Bros. will host a LCS with Downey Jr. and you will be able to hear him answer your questions about the blockbuster movie live through your Blu-ray player. When you register you will be able to submit three questions or, on the day of the LCS, you can submit additional questions online via your home computer. Blu-ray Bob participated in a LCS with McG for Terminator Salvation and even got a response to one of his questions, albeit the silliest one. The technology works surprisingly well and is an innovative way to connect with actors and filmmakers right in your living room.

“Whatcha gonna do when they come for you?” This is the question Sony is asking when Michael Bay’s Bad Boys debuts on Blu-ray on June 1. The adrenaline-fueled action flick starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence as narcotics officers in Miami includes three music videos, commentary by Bay and the documentary “Putting the Boom & Bang in the Bad Boys.

“In space no one can hear you scream—but on Blu-ray they can.” This is the tagline for Fox’s upcoming Alien Anthology, which is now confirmed to include Alien, Aliens, Alien3 and Alien: Resurrection. More details have begun to surface and if you were impressed by the Alien Quadrilogy DVD set, the BD set will blow you out the airlock with new extras and commentaries. Some of the cast for Alien3 even came back to redo some of their dialogue for a new sound mix, presumably for the extended director’s cut.

Warner Bros. is bringing the 2001 family comedy Cats & Dogs starring Jeff Goldblum, Elizabeth Perkins and the voice of Tobey Maguire home to Blu-ray on July 20. If you’re a person who likes to personify your pets (yes, you with the doggie sweater and matching boots), you’ll love this silly romp about cats and dogs fighting a top-secret war for global domination. Bonus features include a commentary track, five making-of featurettes, storyboard comparisons and concept sketches.

Also new on BD this week: The African Queen, Bigger Than Life, The Blind Side, Brothers, Days of Heaven, Fantastic Mr. Fox, Free Willy: Escape From Pirate’s Cove, The Italian Job (2003), Mad Men: Season Three, The Men Who Stare at Goats, Sanjuro, Spring 1941, Toy Story, Toy Story 2 and Yojimbo.
