Real Life 'Evan Almighty' Builds Full-Size Ark

Jun 23, 2011

In keeping with the story of Noah's Ark in the book of Genesis, there are two arks in the news right now. One has to do with the previously reported Noah movie coming from Black Swan director Darren Aronofsky, which may see Christian Bale as a potential candidate to play the 600-year-old beardy biblical figure. The other ark-centric blip on the radar is about Johan Huibers, a man who dreamt that his native Holland was destroyed in a flood, so naturally he built a full-size, seaworthy replica of Noah's beastly boat.

Huibers' project took three years and $1.6 million of his own money to construct. He used cubits – an ancient measurement system – to create the ark. The entire thing measures the length of a football field and about four stories high. The Dutch construction company director has even added pairs of life-size animal replicas (one elephant cost him $11,000) and a few live chickens and other birds. He plans on floating his own boat on the River Thames before the arrival of the 2012 Olympics. Take a peek at the flood floatation device in the video below.
