Production on Michael Bay's Not-Mutant 'Ninja Turtles' Gets Shell Shocked

Jun 15, 2012

News that Michael Bay was producing a new version of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was not well met by fans when it was revealed earlier this year. Dropping the whole Teenage Mutant angle and having the truncated Ninja Turtles be of alien origin was apparently, as the kids say, not cool, dude.

Perhaps those oddly defensive fans of a mostly-'90s bit of pop culture will embrace this development in the film's clearly distressing saga: Paramount has shut down production on Ninja Turtles.

The Hollywood Reporter has the scoop, with a source originally revealing that the film, to be directed by Jonathan Liebesman (Wrath of the Titans) from a Kevin Eastman and Andre Nemec script, was put on an indefinite hold and had laid off its preproduction staff, which included the effects mastermind behind Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol. The outlet then later updated the story saying that its December 2013 release has been bumped to May 2014 and that the lay offs were just temporary to accommodate the ten-week delay.

The promised later release date might be the studio trying to preemptively save face. They've already delayed a fully completed G.I. Joe: Retaliation from a Summer 2012 release to Spring of 2013 for reshoots, and then they put the already-wrapped World War Z back in front of camera for a whopping seven weeks of reshoots after a fresh round of rewriting from Damon Lindelof. Why does the studio have such cold feet on such hot properties? We couldn't tell you (though they probably stink real bad), but if Ninja Turtles does ever end up going back into production, hopefully they solve all of its problems before actually going in front of cameras.
