Gaumont International Television made news earlier this year when they announced they were bringing Thomas Harris’ Hannibal Lecter character to a television near you. The idea of bringing more classic movie characters to the small screen didn’t stop there, though, and now they’ve unveiled their next TV project: A series built around the sci-fi cult classic Barbarella.
Gaumont will team with Martha De Laurentiis and Drive director Nicolas Winding Refn to create the series, inspired by not only the 1968 film, but the Jean Claude Forest graphic novel. De Laurentiis’ late husband, Dino De Laurentiis, produced the original film.
Jane Fonda starred as the sexy intergalactic heroine tasked with traveling to a planet named Tau Ceti to save a weapons inventor so that his latest creation doesn’t fall into the wrong hands. Roger Vadim’s film wasn’t a hit at the time of its release, but it’s since found an appreciative cult audience.
Gaumont is clearly excited about the prospect of introducing a new generation of fans to the character, stating “We are thrilled to have secured the rights from the Forest estate and are thrilled to be pairing the bold visceral style of Nicolas Refn with the pop culture icon Barbarella.” Refn, meanwhile, calls Barbarella “one of the ultimate counter-cultural characters.”
While the show has just been announced, it’s never too soon to start potential casting wishlists. Who would you want to see traipsing across the galaxy as Barbarella? We imagine a lot of people will be in favor of Scarlett Johansson, but this is television – and that seems unlikely. Offer up your best casting suggestions below.
