2001: A Space Odyssey

Back in May, a new, 70mm print of Stanley Kubrick's classic 2001: A Space Odyssey debuted at the Cannes Film Festival, thanks in part to the efforts of filmmaker Christopher Nolan. The new print played in select theaters earlier this summer.

More recently, a magnificent 4K restoration of the film has been playing in theaters nationwide. The wonder of seeing the timeless classic on the big screen made us wonder what new, sci-fi worlds will arriving in theaters in the coming months. Let's look ahead to next year and consider three titles that caught our eye.

Ad Astra

War Machine

Brad Pitt (War Machine, above) stars as an Army Corps engineer who is searching across the universe for his father, "who disappeared [20 years before] on a mission to find alien life." Ruth Negga, Tommy Lee Jones and Donald Sutherland also star.

Director James Gray (The Lost City of Z) told Collider last year: "What I’m trying to do is the most realistic depiction of space travel that’s been put in a movie and to basically say, ‘Space is awfully hostile to us.’ It’s kind of a Heart of Darkness story about traveling to the outer edge of our solar system." That makes us very excited to see what the filmmaker has created. The film is scheduled to open on January 11, 2019.

Chaos Walking

Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Daisy Ridley (Star Wars: The Last Jedi, above) and Tom Holland (Spider-Man: Homecoming) star as two people on the run in a dystopian world on the brink of war. Ridley plays a mysterious young woman who is described as "the key to unlocking secrets." It's based on a popular novel by Patrick Ness, The Knife of Never Letting Go, first published in 2008.

Mads Mikkelsen, Demián Bichir, Kurt Sutter, Nick Jonas, David Oyelowo, Cynthia Erivo and Óscar Jaenada also star. Doug Liman (Edge of Tomorrow) is directing; he always brings vivid energy to his films, and the premise of this sci-fi entry sounds well suited to his talents. It will hit theaters on March 1, 2019.

Captive State

Ten years after an extended occupation by an extraterrestrial force, a neighborhood in Chicago is examined, both the collaborators and the dissidents. Plot details have been kept under wraps, but this sounds like a sci-fi drama grounded in modern-day tensions.

John Goodman (above) and Vera Farmiga lead the cast, which gives us confidence that the film will be bolstered by fine performances. We don't know much else, beyond the fact that it's based on an original screenplay by Erica Beeney and Rupert Wyatt. Best known for Rise of the Planet of the Apes, director Wyatt has been all over the map, genre-wise, but this could be a sci-fi world out of our nightmares. Originally scheduled for release last month, It's now set to open in theaters on March 29, 2019.
