The Kid Who Would Be King

Directed by Joe Cornish (Attack the Block), The Kid Who Would Be King is a swashbuckling family adventure that rated highly with critics, as noted at Rotten Tomatoes. Sadly, it hasn't fared as well at the box office, though; more people turned out in theaters over this past weekend for Glass, The Upside and Aquaman.

Still, the potential audience for family-friendly adventures remains incredibly large, so the question becomes: Which forthcoming live-action productions will grab the attention of younger viewers (and their parental figures)? Here's a look at three titles on the horizon.

Dumbo

A baby elephant with large ears can fly, as two children discover in the opening moments of Disney's new, live-action version of its animated classic. Colin Farrell, Eva Green, Danny DeVito, Alan Arkin and Michael Keaton star; Tim Burton directed.

Dumbo will fly into theaters nationwide on March 29. Read everything we know about it here.

Pokemon Detective Pikachu

The latest TV spot conveys the essence of the movie's premise, as the adorable titular character (voiced by Ryan Reynolds) teams up with a young human (Justice Smith) in search of the human's father. It's based on the ever-popular Nintendo game and also stars Ken Watanabe and Kathryn Newton.

A sequel is already under development, per Variety. That bodes well for the first adventure. Pokémon Detective Pikachu will arrive in theaters everywhere on May 10. Read everything we know about it here.

Aladdin

The animated version of Aladdin is beloved by nearly everyone, featuring the late Robin Williams in one of his signature roles. So perhaps it's best that Disney has been playing it coy with the new live-action version, featuring Will Smith as the human embodiment of the animated Genie. Director Guy Ritchie is at the helm, so we can likely expect the family adventure to include distinctive action sequences.

Mena Massoud and Naomi Scott star. Aladdin will magically appear in theaters across the country on May 24. Read everything we know about it here.
