Family adventures never go out of season. So, although the robot dog adventure A.X.L. (above) did not perform well at the box office this past weekend, it's notable that audiences gave it a positive rating, which may encourage others to check it out.

What does the future hold for engaging family adventures? Here are three upcoming titles, all aimed at family audiences, yet each distinctive in its own way, with sufficient variety to please everyone.

The House with a Clock in Its Walls

Young Lewis (Owen Vaccaro) comes to live with his uncle Jonathan (Jack Black) in a big old spooky house. Uncle Jonathan reveals himself to be a friendly warlock who is only too happy to teach Lewis his magic, which should come in handy when a mysterious clock in the walls of the house unveils its dangerous powers.

Cate Blanchett also stars as a helpful neighbor with her own secrets. Directed by Eli Roth, the family adventure will open in theaters everywhere on September 21.

The Nutcracker and the Four Realms

Still mourning the loss of her mother, young Clara (Mackenzie Foy, from Inception) is transported into a strange, magical world -- created by her mother! For all its beauty and wonder, however, the world is under attack and Clara realizes she must protect its future existence.

Keira Knightley, Helen Mirren and Morgan Freeman also star. Look for the family fantasy in theaters on November 2.

The Grinch

Voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch, Grinch is perpetually annoyed by … well … everything. He has a personal sore spot, though, about Christmas, and so decides to ruin the holiday for the citizens of Whoville with disastrous results.

Rest assured that this comic adventure will capture the hearts of grumpy family members everywhere, just in time to enjoy the holiday spirit. It will open in theaters on November 9.
