New Writers Hired for 'Cowboy Ninja Viking'; Here's All We Know

Jurassic World

Chris Pratt (Jurassic World, above) will star as an assassin with a multiple-personality disorder in the upcoming Cowboy Ninja Viking. The project aims to start production this summer and has just hired two new writers, per THR. Let's review what we know about the movie

What's it about?

it's based on a comic book series created by A.J. Lieberman and Riley Rossmo, first published in 2009. Disney acquired rights to the series in 2010, which eventually went to Universal in 2012. Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick (Zombieland, G.I. Joe: Retaliation, Deadpool) wrote the first draft of the screenplay.

The writing duo had their own ideas for the lead character's multiple personalities to manifest themselves on-screen. Marc Forster (World War Z) was attached to direct at the time, though he eventually dropped out. Writer Craig Mazin (Identity Thief) also worked on the screenplay.

Who will star?

Soon after Guardians of the Galaxy became a smash hit in 2014, Chris Pratt was attached to star in Cowboy Ninja Viking. Since then, he's starred in Jurassic World, The Magnificent Seven, Passengers and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. He also makes a notable supporting performance in Avengers: Infinity War.

In other words, he's transformed from a promising big-screen presence to an established star in just a few years, so his presence in the lead role now sounds even more intriguing.

Who will direct?

Michelle MacLaren. Her many credits include episodes of TV's Game of Thrones, The Deuce, Breaking Bad and Westworld, among others. She came on board in February 2018.

Is it unusual for new writers to be hired this close to production?

Many big-budget projects hire writers to nip and tuck changes to the screenplay as the start of production approaches. What is unusual is that Dan Mazeau (Wrath of the Titans) and Ryan Engle (The Commuter, Non-Stop) have not worked as a writing team before.

According to THR, "the studio and producers had been meeting various scribes for the project, and, with Mazeau and Engel, felt each writer had his own strengths and ideas that they liked. They then took the rare, but not unheard of, step of asking the scribes to work together, and Mazeau and Engel agreed."

When can we see it?

Cowboy Ninja Viking will open in theaters via Universal Pictures on June 28, 2019.
