The VOD Report: 'Take This Waltz' Before Theaters, Plus Download 'Safe House' Two Weeks Before Disc

May 22, 2012

Check out what's new to rent and own this week on the various streaming services such as cable On Demand, Amazon, iTunes, Vudu, Blockbuster and, of course, Netflix.

Cable On Demand
Cable offers VOD programming (same-day-as-disc releases, older titles and pre-theatrical exclusives) for rent, usually for 24- or 48-hour periods at prices from about $2.99 for older titles to $9.99 for new or exclusive releases. Since cable offers a direct connection from your cable provider, its VOD offerings are usually less prone to outside interference and can be streamed with surround sound and 3D when available.

Best buds and CIA operatives Chris Pine and Tom Hardy fall for the same woman (Reese Witherspoon) and use all the tricks at their disposal to win her heart in This Means War. This romantic comedy directed by McG has a dose of action to keep guys interested and arrives on cable On Demand the same day as DVD and Blu-ray.

Last week, we reported that the creepy ghost story The Woman in Black starring Daniel Radcliffe was available to download to own on some VOD services. Now the period horror film is available to rent on cable the same day the movie arrives on DVD and Blu-ray.

Red Tails is a World War II drama that tells the tale of the Tuskegee Airmen—the first group of African-American soldiers to be called into action. The high-flying historical movie starring Cuba Gooding Jr. and Terrence Howard soars onto cable the same day as disc.

From the same studio that created the animated features Ponyo and Spirited Away comes The Secret World of Arrietty, based on the novel The Borrowers. This G-rated animated gem is available for audiences of all ages to stream the same day it arrives on Blu-ray for the first time.

Take This Waltz is an upcoming Canadian comedy-drama that involves a love triangle between Michelle Williams, her hubby of five years (Seth Rogen), and the rickshaw driver (Luke Kirby) that lives across the street. The movie hasn't even opened in theaters yet, but you can stream Take This Waltz on cable (except for Cox Communications) on May 25 for a premium price.

These four services stream movies to your TV via computer, Blu-ray player, game console or other compatible connected device. Like cable VOD, they offer new titles for rent from about $3.99 to $6.99, but, unlike cable, they also offer the option of downloading the movie to own from about $14.99 to $19.99. Usually movies presented in HD cost a bit more than streaming a SD version.

This Means War and Red Tails are available on all four services for rent and/or purchase as is The Woman in Black, which is now available for rent. As of now, only Vudu will offer a pre-theatrical peek at Take This Waltz on May 25, and none of the four services are streaming The Secret World of Arrietty.

Denzel Washington stars as a lethal prisoner who is escorted from a compromised safe house by CIA agent Ryan Reynolds as they try to avoid being taken down in Safe House. The action flick doesn't explode onto DVD and Blu-ray until June 5, but you can download it to own—not rent—right now on all four services. In addition, Vudu offers a free 10-minute preview so you can try before you buy.

In the tragic romance Perfect SenseEwan McGregor and Eva Green play new lovers that are just getting to know each other as an epidemic sweeps the globe that causes people to rapidly lose their five senses one by one. This unusual film featuring real chemistry between the two doomed characters is available to rent or own on Amazon and iTunes the same day as DVD and Blu-ray.

The comedy Newlyweds stars Edward Burns and Caitlin Fitzgerald as a newly married couple whose stress-free life is disrupted when his damaged half-sister arrives for a prolonged stay in the couple's Tribeca loft. Newlyweds is available on Amazon, Vudu and iTunes the same day as the indie arrives on DVD.

Netflix's all-you-can-stream buffet costs $7.99 per month and gives instant access to thousands of movies and television shows via a computer, Blu-ray player, game console or other compatible device. Don't depend on Netflix streaming for same-day-as-disc releases, however. Instead, Netflix offers catalog titles, vintage movies, indie flicks and TV episodes with unlimited access for one monthly price.

Titles you can look forward to checking out this week that are new to Netflix's Watch Instantly library include National Lampoon's The Legend of Awesomest Maximus, A Mother's Love, Abelar: Tales of an Ancient Empire, Dysfunctional Friends, The Heir Apparent: Largo Wench, Henry's Crime and a pair of comedy specials featuring Ralphie May.

If you were waiting around to stream Dangerous Liaisons starring Glenn Close and John Malkovich, you might have to wait awhile longer because Netflix just retired it from its library for an undetermined amount of time. Other titles expiring this week include Hideous Kinky, Let's Talk About Sex, Colony, Ingredients, Big River, I Capture the Castle, Forever Strong, Pretty Persuasion, School of Flesh and Saint Ralph.
