Thank God it’s Friday – but before you head off for the weekend, check out three brand spankin’ new trailers for some upcoming films we’re very excited about.
First up, we’ve got the latest clip for James Wan’s upcoming horror flick (that’s right, marketing folks – it’s a horror movie. Stop calling it a thriller) The Conjuring. Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga star in this supernatural-themed chiller, playing real-life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren (you might remember the Warrens becoming famous for their work on the Amityville haunting).
Early buzz for the film – which has the rare honor of being a horror movie released right in the heart of summer blockbuster season (July 19) – has been overwhelmingly positive. The previous trailer was totally creepy, but the new clip goes in a slightly different direction.
This preview really plays up the “based on a true story” angle, featuring the real Perron family discussing what happened in their hell house as it intercuts footage from the fllm. We remain unconvinced this is the right way to market the film (based on a true story horror films can be a little extra creepy, but they can also put people off who don’t believe in the supernatural in the first place), and this clip isn’t as impressive as the previous one, but we’re still excited to see The Conjuring. Next up, we’ve got the second official trailer for Dennis Villenueve’s star-studded drama Prisoners.
It’s every parent’s worst nightmare – the kids go out to play, and they don’t come back. Hugh Jackman, Maria Bello, Terrence Howard and Viola Davis experience this firsthand in the upcoming feature. Jake Gyllenhaal plays a detective tasked with finding the missing kids, but when his prime suspect walks, Jackman takes matters into his own hands in this tale guaranteed to resonate with parents. What happens if he’s not right, though?
The new clip looks pretty exciting – and if it piques your interest enough to convince you to see the whole movie, you’ll be able to do that on September 20.
Finally, we wrap up this week’s trailer-palooza with another supernatural film – but this one’s a comedy, so you won’t have to cover your eyes during the scary bits.
Reno 911! guys Robert Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon have released a new trailer for their upcoming horror-comedy Hell Baby – and it looks pretty funny.
The writer-actors star as a couple of priests cut from the Father Guido Sarducci mold, who’ve been sent by the Vatican to investigate a potential case of demonic possession. Lots of laughs appear to follow. Horror and comedy are two genres that are hard to pull of singularly, and putting them together ups the challenge factor almost exponentially, but this clip is pretty amusing. Hell Baby may not go down as a cult classic, but it already appears to be about a billion times better than all the Scary Movie sequels combined.
You can catch Hell Baby on VOD and iTunes starting July 25, followed by a limited theatrical run in September. [via The Movie Box]
