FDR Gets, uh, Sexy?

Hyde Park on Hudson - Blu-ray and DVD

Director: Roger Michell
Cast: Bill MurrayLaura LinneySamuel WestOlivia Colman,Elizabeth MarvelFull cast + crew

Hyde Park on Hudson is a strange film; not in presentation or style - it's very by the books in that regard - but in the odd way in which it romanticizes history. On the one hand, it's refreshing to see a movie that takes on a rather overlooked bit of American political history - FDR's affair with his fifth cousin - but it would help if it was actually historically accurate (historians don't believe the affair was sexual)... or even tonally consistent. It swings from endearing portrait of a polio-stricken man who happens to be the president of the United States of America to an almost laughable affair.

It's nice to see a period piece about American politics from the point of view of someone who wasn't an actual politician, and Bill Murray and Laura Linney are both fine as the mildly adulterous couple, but overall it's a slight, simple film. If you love Murray or Linney, it's worth a gander, but otherwise it's a rather dry film despite waves of quirkiness.

Special Features: Commentary with Roger Michell and producer Kevin Loader, deleted scenes, two behind-the-scenes featurettes

Woochi: The Demon Slayer is a South Korean martial arts movie about wizards. If any of those words intrigued you, you're probably going to have a great time with this fun flick about a wizard who is transported hundreds of years into his future, which happens to be our present. It's got a good sense of humor, a fairly large sense of scale, and some pretty kick-ass set pieces. If you like your martial arts movies a bit more serious, though, then check out Jet Li in The Sorcerer and the White Snake. It's still got plenty of fantasy elements to it (hard not to when your bad guy is a thousand-year old demon snake), but it's not quite as silly or loose as Woochi. Both are worthwhile.

Also out this week is Planet Ocean, a new nature doc from the team that made Home. It's narrated by Josh Duhamel, an unexpected but capable choice, and features a pretty stunning look at the water-bound mysteries, both large and small, our planet still holds. Then there's the Criterion Blu-ray release of one of David Cronenberg's more out-there movies, Naked Lunch, and the excellently titled horror comedy Bad Kids Go to Hell.
