This week one of our favorite movies of 2014 hits home video. It's called Blue Ruin, and it's about a lonely man (the superb Macon Blair) who is given the opportunity to punish the man who wronged him years ago, only to realize that there is no such thing as a simple murder. That may sound like the premise for your typical revenge thriller, but trust us when we say Blue Ruin is far from your typical indie revenge thriller.

Earlier this year many people moaned that the box office failure of Sabotage meant that R-rated action movies were dead, as was Arnold Schwarzenegger's ability to open a movie. What these people left out of their complaints was the sadder reality that Sabotage just isn't a very good movie. The script is ridiculous and yet takes itself way too seriously to ever let the ridiculousness become fun. So instead it's just vulgar and long and cliche riddled. If you're seeing it for Arnold, you'll be bored. If you're seeing it because David Ayer's last movie, End of Watch, was tight and intense, you'll be disappointed. And that's all a shame, because it does have a good cast, and some of them are having fun (Mirielle Enos for one), but overall it's just a chore.

Speaking of chores, Transcendence also hits store shelves this week. This is just a dull, dumb, dry movie packed with pseudoscience delivered with the same sort of authenticity as the lab technicians babbling away on any given episode of CSI. It's kind of amazing so many talented people collided together for such a joyless slog.

If you do want a bit more joy in your movies this week, you should turn to Dom Hemingway, which features an utterly hilarious performance from Jude Law as a salty criminal trying to get back into life after years spent in jail. On the horror front we've got All Cheerleaders Die (read our interview with the directors here) and Ginger Snaps, two movies that are definitely recommended for people who like laughs to go with the splatter.
