Release of the Week
Skyfall - MGM - Blu-ray and DVD
Director: Sam Mendes
Cast: Daniel Craig, Judi Dench, Javier Bardem, Ralph Fiennes, Naomie Harris. Full cast + crew
Few movies in 2012 looked and sounded quite as stunning as Skyfall. That alone should make this Blu-ray a must-have for anyone with an HDTV. It certainly doesn't hurt that it's also a fantastic Bond film that injects a much-needed sense of creativity and duty by forgetting all the crazy gadgets and wacky supervillain schemes and getting back to the suave, enigmatic spy roots.
Special Features: commentary with Sam Mendes; commentary with producers Barbara Broccoli, Michael G. Wilson and Production Designer Dennis Gasner; an hour of making-of materials split into smaller, topic-specific sections; trailers
Silent Hill: Revelation got savaged by critics and audiences alike, but fans of the games and Christoph Gans' first film will no doubt hold out hope that it's not quite as bad as the buzz. The same could be said of RZA's directorial debut, The Man with the Iron Fists, only in this case you are getting exactly what it says on the tin: a gleeful love letter to old martial arts movies.
If you'd like some more serious fare this week, do check out either The Perks of Being a Wallflower or The Sessions, two movies that are widely loved by critics that never had the massive breakouts with audiences that people were predicting. The Thieves, however, did have massive, massive box office success, only it was in its native South Korea where it went on to become the second most popular movie of all time (The Host is still number one in tickets sold). Think of it like the Korean equivalent of Oceans 11 and you'll be in the right mindset.
