New on Disc This Week: From District 9 to the Latest American Pie Sequel

Dec 23, 2009

Are you one of those last-minute shoppers? The last batch of discs to come out before Christmas includes some out-of-this-world illegal aliens and more randy teenagers.

District 9: Peter Jackson produced this superior sci-fi drama about alien refugees called “prawns” who must be relocated out of the slum known as District 9 in Johannesburg, South Africa. Newcomer Sharlto Copley plays one of the government officials serving eviction notices to the aliens who is infected by a strange substance and becomes more sympathetic to their plight as he slowly morphs into a prawn. Available on both DVD and Blu-ray, this acclaimed thinking-man’s blockbuster has several making-of featurettes. The BD also has an interactive map of District 9, commentary by director Neill Blomkamp, a three-part filmmaker’s documentary and much more.

Extract: Mike Judge fans will want to check out the director’s latest comedy starring Jason Bateman as a factory owner who seems to have it all except that his wife isn’t interested in him and one of his employees is a beautiful con artist who could take down the company. Will Bateman’s scheming with his drug-addled friend (Ben Affleck) help matters? What do you think? Available on both DVD and Blu-ray with “Mike Judge’s Secret Recipe,” the BD also has deleted and extended scenes.

(500) Days of Summer: Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays a greeting-card writer and hopeless romantic who tries to figure out what went wrong in his relationship with his so-called girlfriend (Zooey Deschanel) during their time together in this post-modern romantic comedy. Extras include commentary with director Marc Webb and others, deleted scenes and “Summer at Sundance.” The Blu-ray version adds audition tapes, storyboards, a music video, filmmaking specials and “Six Conversations with Zooey and Joseph” to the mix.

American Pie Presents: The Book of Love: Three buddies at Great Falls High eager to land the lady of their dreams discover a legendary guide to seduction hidden in the school’s library. Eugene Levy is the only returning cast member in this raunchy sequel to American Pie. The DVD and Blu-ray have deleted scenes, a gag reel and featurettes. The BD also has “American Pie Trivia” and BD-Live connectivity.

Also new this week: All About Steve, Beyond a Reasonable Doubt, Family Guy Presents: Something Something Something Dark Side, It Might Get Loud and Staten Island
