8 Great...Seafaring Movie Explorers in Honor of Columbus Day

Oct 10, 2011 Comments

As we celebrate Columbus Day, our movie-loving thoughts naturally turn to the great seafaring explorers of the past, those intrepid adventurers who courageously sallied forth across boundless bodies of water, hoping to discover new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no one had gone before … long before Captain Kirk uttered those words aboard the Starship Enterprise.

Christopher Columbus was honored in the United States as far back as 1792, when the 300th anniversary of his landing was celebrated in New York City and beyond. In recent years, protestors have raised questions about whether Columbus is worthy of being honored, especially in view of the devastating effect that colonization had upon indigenous peoples. Thus, it seems appropriate to start with a film that tackles the question head on.
