8 Great ... Fairy Tale Heroines That Could Use an Action Reboot

Gratefully, 2012 has been a good year in cinema for the ladies so far. The two biggest box office performers, The Avengers and The Hunger Games, both feature empowered, proactive heroines that don’t wait for the guys to save her or motivate her actions. It’s been a long-time coming for Hollywood execs to get the message that strong women are a sell to everyone.

Even fairy tales, the inspiration for so many traditional on-screen tales of heroes saving their damsels-in-distress, are getting looked at with more progressive eyes by screenwriters and updated for today’s audiences. Take Snow White and the Huntsman starring Kristen Stewart as a Snow White who doesn’t just Disney-style run from her evil stepmother and keep house for a bunch of attitude specific miners. No, Stewart’s Snow starts out the victim but quickly takes lessons from her Huntsman ally (Chris Hemsworth) in protecting herself by force, and eventually assembles her own army against the evil Queen Ravenna (Charlize Theron). We’re onboard with that twist to the beloved tale.

SWATH got us thinking about what other fairy tale story heroines could benefit from casting aside her traditional, passive constraints for a brand-new (perhaps) ass-kicking version to emerge. Here are some of our ideas…
