The 'Power Rangers' Movie Gets Serious with 'Star Trek' and 'X-Men: First Class' Talent

Power Rangers

UPDATE: 7/15/14: Roberto Orci (Transformers, Star Trek) has come aboard the Power Rangers movie as an executive producer. And that's not all: the studio has also hired X-Men: First Class writers Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz (they also wrote Thor and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles) to pen the screenplay.

So if you thought Lionsgate may have just been putting together a quick cash-in on a brand name, it looks like the studio is hiring some quality big-screen talent to bring this all together. If you take the Power Rangers seriously, you should be happy to know the studio does too.

Previously 5/7/14: Go, go Power Rangers!

If those words inspire fond memories of the early 1990s, then you’ll be thrilled to know that everyone’s favorite costumed kung fu fighters are about to return to the big screen for an all new adventure.

Saban, the company that brought the colorfully clad Mighty Morphin Power Rangers to the world, has teamed up with Lionsgate to reveal plans for a brand new live-action adventure film.

Given the still rabid fan base for the Rangers, and the popularity of superhero movies, this makes sense. The show has been spun off into comics, video games, toys and more since its 1993 debut. It even had earlier feature film versions, with the release of 1995’s Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie and 1997’s Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie. Now the companies hope they can lure new and old fans to the multiplex for this modern update.

Early buzz says the new film will “reenvision” the Power Rangers, a group of high school kids with superpowers who must learn to work as a team to save the world.

Regarding the announcement, Saban notes:

"Lionsgate is the perfect home for elevating our Power Rangers brand to the next level. They have the vision, marketing prowess and incredible track record in launching breakthrough hits from The Hunger Games to Twilight and Divergent. In partnership with the Lionsgate team, we're confident that we will capture the world of the Power Rangers and translate it into a unique and memorable motion picture phenomenon with a legacy all its own."

While the show has been a hit for over 20 years, the Power Rangers aren’t quite the global phenomenon they once were. Could a new film put them back in the spotlight, or will a modern Mighty Morphin movie seem quaint and archaic next to all the big-budget superhero flicks crowding your local theater? Let casting speculation about who will play the Red Ranger commence!
