Screenwriter Simon Beaufoy will be rewriting New Line's found-footage tornado project, formerly referred to as Category 6. The scribe has been busy working on the script for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire but he'll now be taking over duties from short film director John Swetnam.
Also, Friday Night Lights' Jeremy Sumpter has been cast as the brother of a cameraman. The film follows a group of high school students through video cam and cell phone footage as they try to cope with a violent tornado. The young actor will appear alongside Arlen Escarpeta (Final Destination 5), newcomer Alycia Debnam-Carey, TV star Nathan Kress, and The Walking Dead's Sarah Wayne.
It was also just announced that The Hobbit actor Richard Armitage will also be appearing in the movie — without makeup, of course — lending some credibility to what could be a throwaway project with too much shaky cam. Sure, it still could be, but we like Armitage (aka Thorin Oakenshield) and if there has to be another found footage movie, we're glad he's in it. Steven Quale (Final Destination 5) will be directing the project, which starts shooting July 23 in Michigan. [via Variety]
