Check Out a Teaser Trailer and Poster for the Next 'Godzilla' Movie

Dec 10, 2015

There's a new Godzilla movie coming out next year. No, it's not the sequel to the recent Hollywood version directed by Gareth Edwards. That arrives in 2018. For some of you, the 2016 release will be the preferred option for the "King of the Monsters" anyway. It's called Godzilla Resurgence, and it's the first Toho-produced Japanese Godzilla movie in 12 years, since 2004's Godzilla: Final Wars.

Toho is the studio that made the original Godzilla in 1954, and over the course of half a century produced a total of 28 entries in the franchise. Most of them are enjoyed for their iconic hokiness, particularly with regards to the man-in-a-suit monster effects. Godzilla Resurgence will feature a mix of computer and practical effects, but it will reportedly look like the creature from the first installment.

A new poster for the movie seems to confirm that look, and a new teaser trailer implies that co-director Shinji Higuchi (who has teamed up with Neon Genesis Evangelion creator Hideaki Anno) has indeed made the most terrifying version of the monster we've seen, as he has stated was the intent. It's also supposed to be the largest version yet. We don't actually get to see Godzilla in the teaser, which is all found-footage style shots of people running from the enormous lizard.

It's unclear if that will be the primary aesthetic for the movie, which is expected to spawn a whole new series of Godzilla movies that will not be connected at all to the American take (which will soon crossover with a new King Kong). Check out the first look below. And hope that Godzilla Resurgence will play theaters in the US soon after it debuts in Japan on July 29, 2016.
