High-Profile New Releases

Hugo (Paramount Pictures)

Release Date: Nov 23, 2011
Director: Martin Scorsese
Cast: Ben KingsleySacha Baron CohenAsa Butterfield,Chloë Grace MoretzRay WinstoneFull cast + crew

Verdict: Buy Me
Available On: 3D Blu-ray, Blu-ray Combo Pack, DVD
Special Features: Shoot the Moon, The Cinemagician: Georges Méliès, The Mechanical Man at the Heart of Hugo, Big Effects, Small Scale, Sacha Baron Cohen: Role of a Lifetime
Additional Thoughts: Hugo is an incredible piece of filmmaking, but I'm also biased considering it was my favorite film of 2011. If you've been sitting on seeing it, that's a shame because, unless you have a 3D TV at home, you're missing out on crucial part of Martin Scorsese's beautiful vision, but the picture and sound quality here is top notch, reference quality. And on top of a great film with a great presentation, the special features here are each worth a watch-- the magic that went into making this film about movie magic is just astounding. Check out a sample of the extras thanks to Fandango:

Johnny English Reborn (Universal)
Release Date: Oct 21, 2011
Director: Oliver Parker
Cast: Rowan AtkinsonGillian AndersonRosamund Pike,Dominic WestDaniel KaluuyaFull cast + crew

Verdict: Forget Me
Available On: Blu-ray Combo Pack, DVD
Special Features: Audio Commentary, Featurette, Deleted Scenes, Gag Reel
Additional Thoughts: If you can look at the cover of Johnny English Reborn and not flinch, you may actually be the kind of (rare) person that will enjoy this spy farce. It's not a terrible, irredeemable movie. It's got a solid cast and a few decent laughs, but as a whole the Johnny English series is basically just the British equivalent of Delta Farce. It's fleeting, it's pointless, and it's neither smart enough to be a good farce nor complex enough to be a decent action movie, but at least it's not going to make your brain try to crawl out of your skull.
