A New 'Cheech & Chong' Movie Is in the Works from the Director of 'Super Troopers'

Loveable stoner duo Cheech & Chong were a staple of late-night television during the 1980s, but the cannabis-friendly comedians reappeared last year in the film Cheech & Chong's Animated Movie — which brought their 1970s comedy albums to life. Website CelebStoner (yes, a website that actually exists) reports that we’ll be treated to more classic stoner shenanigans courtesy of Super Troopers director Jay Chandrasekhar.

"He's working a script right now for us," Chong stated. "We've had some preliminary meetings. It looks really good. It looks really funny. It's about us going to a festival called the Burning Joint. All sorts of shenanigans happen. It's going to be a lot of fun." Of course, Burning Joint sounds like an obvious spoof of the Burning Man festival, which is a week-long annual event held in the Black Rock Desert in Nevada (and features enough sex and drugs for an entire continent — at least unofficially). “They came at us with a rough idea and now they're fleshing it out and making it into a budgetable script," Chong added. "We could start shooting this summer."

We can’t think of a more perfect union than Chandrasekhar and C&C, really. The filmmaker has roots in the comedic circuit with his own troupe Broken Lizard and seems a close relative of Cheech & Chong’s raucous, horny, pot-smoking shtick. Can Chandrasekhar make this blast from the past relevant again? Did they ever stop being relevant? Discuss.
