Cheap Thrills - Drafthouse Films - Blu-ray and DVD
Director:
Cast: Pat HealyEthan EmbrySara PaxtonDavid Koechner.Full cast + crew

If we were still in the '90s, Cheap Thrills would be the kind of movie constantly checked out at your local video store. Not because it's a '90s throwback in any capacity, but because it's got that vintage, word-of-mouth quality to it where you keep badgering friends to check it out until they finally do. Well, if you didn't see Cheap Thrills in theaters, and you didn't rent it On Demand, then now you are truly out of excuses. It's available on Blu-ray and DVD everywhere, and you've simply got to see this tremendous dark comedy about the way money corrupts everyone from your average Joe up to a crazy millionaire.

Special Features: A commentary track from director E.L. Katz and star Pat Healy; a 40-minute making-of that shows how the movie was made in only 12 days; a six-minute recap of the film's insane Q&A from last year's Fantastic Fest.

Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons opens with a little girl watching her father disappear into a pool of blood in the water, followed by her village's absurd attempts to kill a giant fish with a doglike face as it keeps eating more people by using a giant tongue to suck them into the water. And then things get weird. It's the latest film from Stephen Chow (Kung-Fu Hustle), though he doesn't star in this over-the-top action movie. If you like Chinese mythology, and don't mind some pretty spotty CGI, you'll have a good time.

Sleepaway Camp is a horror classic where even people who haven't seen it have probably at least heard more than a little about it, but beyond its notorious ending, you've really got to be a fan of slashers to truly, wildly, deeply love this. The acting is iffy, and the kills are hit or miss, but the camp atmosphere is kind of irresistible if you're a genre fan. Plus, this new Blu-ray from horror masters Scream Factory has a bunch of new special features, including three commentary tracks, and most notably 45 minutes of new retrospective material. There's also a music video, a short film sequel starring original Judy Karen Fields, trailers, and a pretty cool look at how Scream Factory works its restoration magic.

Also out from Scream Factory this week is the rather creepy 2012 Vietnamese horror movie House in the Alley, which for horror fans is a notable entry in the "don't watch if you're about to have a baby" genre. It's about a couple who have a miscarriage and are driven apart by the loss until the husband becomes obsessed with the idea that maybe the house they just moved into had something to do with it. Lastly this week for genre fans we have 24 Exposures, which is a weirdly meta film directed by Joe Swanberg starring his You're Next writer-director team of Adam Wingard and Simon Barrett in a sleazy murder mystery.

If out-there horror movies aren't your thing, this week also sees the home video release of Endless Love, the bland Alex Pettyfer, Gabriella Wilde-starring remake of the 1981 movie about a steamy teenage romance that butts up against parental disapproval. And if you can't stand remakes, but like the story, the '81 version starring Brooke Shields gets a new DVD.
