High-Profile New Releases

Underworld: Awakening (Screen Gems)
Release Date: Jan 20, 2012
Director: Mans MarlindBjorn Stein
Cast: Kate BeckinsaleStephen ReaMichael EalyIndia EisleySandrine HoltFull cast + crew

Verdict: Rent Me
Available On: 3D Blu-ray, Blu-ray Combo Pack, DVD
Special Features: Commentary, Selene Rises (12 min), Casting the Future (12 min), Resuming the Action (9 min), Building a Better Lycan (10 min), Awakening a Franchise (19 min), Bloopers (3 min), PiP Experience
Additional Thoughts: As someone who is barely even a casual fan of the Underworld franchise, I was surprised at how much fun I had with Underworld: Awakening. The series has always been about gunplay and absurd action, but the fourth entry is the most ridiculous- in a good way. The plot is thin, but Kate Beckinsale's ass-kickings are fast and propulsive, which is exactly how they should be in a movie like this. So if you thought this was a tired or dull franchise, or if you've never seen the others, give this one a shot. It's fun.

Mother's Day (Anchor Bay)
Release Date: May 04, 2012
Director: Darren Lynn Bousman
Cast:Jaime KingPatrick FluegerRebecca De Mornay,Warren KoleMatt O'LearyFull cast + crew

Verdict: Rent Me
Available On: Blu-ray Combo Pack, DVD
Special Features: Commentary with Darren Lynn Bousman and Shawn Ashmore
Additional Thoughts: It's been a year-and-a-half since I caught the world premiere of Mother's Day at Fantastic Fest, and while I wasn't head over heels about it, I at least liked it well enough to be disappointed that it never got the wide release it deserved. There's a little too many wannabe psychological games at play, but the cast (particularly Rebecca De Mornay) save it, and Bousman's direction gives it a bit more energy than most home invasion movies these days are.

Gremlins 2: The New Batch (Warner Home Video)
Release Date: Jun 15, 1990
Director: Joe Dante
Cast:Zach GalliganPhoebe CatesJohn GloverRobert ProskyRobert PicardoFull cast + crew

Verdict: Buy Me
Available On: Blu-ray
Special Features: Commentary (with Joe Dante, writer Charlie Haas, star Zach Galligan, producer Michael Finnel), Making of Gremlins 2 (6 min), Deleted Scenes (22 min), Gag Reel (6 min), Alternate Home Video Sequence (3 min), Trailer
Additional Thoughts: You no doubt already know whether or not you love Gremlins 2: The New Batch. If you do, chances are you've loved it since you were a kid. If you don't, chances are you've just never seen it. Sure, this is an increasingly silly sequel to the comical but mostly serious original, but it's all in service of fun creature work and a wry riff on the go-go corporate business mantra of the late '80s. The special features here are ported over from the last DVD issue of the film, but it gets a worthwhile HD upgrade on both the audio and visual fronts.
