High-Profile New Releases

Drive (Sony)
Release Date: September 16, 2011
Rated: R fo r strong brutal bloody violence, language and some nudity
Runtime: 100 minutes
Genres: Crime, Drama, Thriller
Director: Nicolas Winding Refn
Cast: Ryan Gosling, Carey Mulligan, Bryan Cranston, Albert Brooks, Christina Hendricks

Verdict: Buy Me
Available On: Blu-ray, DVD
Additional Thoughts: Drive is simply one of the best films of 2011. The score, the cinematography, the performances, they all suck you into this darkly beautiful tale of a different kind of white knight who needs a princess to rescue.

The Thing (Universal)
Release Date: October 14, 2011
Rated: R for strong creature violence and gore, disturbing images, and language
Runtime: 103 minutes
Genres: Horror, Sci-Fi
Director: Matthijs van Heijningen Jr.
Cast: Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Joel Edgerton, Eric Christian Olsen, Ulrich Thomsen, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje

Verdict: Rent Me
Available On: Blu-ray, DVD
Additional Thoughts: The Thing is not a great movie, not by any stretch, but it's also not the despicable abomination it could be. The film's goal and intentions are admirable, but its clear desire to pay tribute to one of the finest horror films of all time is constantly drowned by studio intervention and this absurd need to fix what isn't broken. The commentary and special features on this disc reveal an impressive world of practical effects and original ideas, but for some sad reason they've all been removed or replaced by CGI in the final film.

Dream House (Universal)
Release Date: September 30, 2011
Rated: PG-13 for violence, terror, some sexuality, and brief strong language
Runtime: 92 minutes
Genres: Thriller
Director: Jim Sheridan
Cast: Daniel Craig, Rachel Weisz, Naomi Watts, Elias Koteas

Verdict: Forget Me
Available On: Blu-ray, DVD
Additional Thoughts: If The Thing is not a great movie, Dream House is really, really, really, really, really not a great movie. Oh, it's got great talents involved, but they're all sleep walking through this dull movie about shattered memories and questionable realities.

High-Profile Catalog Releases

Malcolm X (Warner Home Video)
Release Date: November 18, 1992
Rated: PG-13 for a scene of violence, and for drugs and some language
Runtime: 202 minutes
Genres: Biography, Drama
Director: Spike Lee
Cast: Denzel Washington, Angela Bassett, Albert Hall, Delroy Lindo, Spike Lee

Verdict: Buy Me
Available On: Blu-ray
Additional Thoughts: Warner Bros. has done a great service to one of Spike Lee's most interesting films, Malcolm X. Not only is it a great package that includes a booklet on the film, but it's also loaded with special features taking a look back at the construction of the controversial biopic. And, on top of all that, it even includes a DVD of the 1972 Oscar-nominated documentary of the same name.

To Kill a Mocking Bird (Universal)
Release Date: March 16, 1963
Rated: NR
Runtime: 129 minutes
Genres: Drama
Director: Robert Mulligan
Cast: Gregory Peck, Frank Overton, Brock Peters, Robert Duvall, Richard Hale

Verdict: Rent Me
Available On: Blu-ray Collector's Book, Blu-ray, DVD
Additional Thoughts: To Kill a Mockingbird is one of those movies that's worth celebrating because of its cultural relevance and power. Honestly, the movie is a bit dry, but it's great source material and Universal has really done a stand-up job of remastering the film for HD, as well as restoring a ton of footage for newly-produced special features.

The Magnificent Ambersons (Warner Home Video)
Release Date: July 10, 1942
Rated: NR
Runtime: 88 minutes
Genres: Drama, Romance
Director: Orson Welles
Cast: Joseph Cotten, Dolores Costello, Anne Baxter, Tim Holt, Agnes Moorehead

Verdict: Buy Me
Available On: DVD
Additional Thoughts: I actually haven't seen The Magnificent Ambersons, but that's precisely why it's a must buy. This is Orson Welles' most underseen films, one that's been widely unavailable but also widely considered to be one of his most unique and personal works. And now, at long last, it's available on DVD.
