High-Profile New Releases

The Ides of March (Sony)
Release Date: Oct 07, 2011
Rated: R for Pervasive language
Runtime: 1 hr. 40 min.
Genres: Drama
Director:George Clooney
Cast:Ryan GoslingGeorge ClooneyPhilip Seymour HoffmanPaul GiamattiEvan Rachel WoodFull cast + crew

Verdict: Rent Me
Available On: Blu-ray, DVD
Additionational thoughts: Any George Clooney-directed film is a safe bet for a good time, and The Ides of March is no exception. Unless, of course, you have zero interest in politics, in which case this sort of behind-the-scenes look at a fictional campaign may bore you a bit. However, strong performances from Clooney, Ryan Gosling, Paul Giamatti and Evan Rachel Wood do counter most political dryness.

Redline (Anchor Bay)
Release Date: Dec 02, 2011
Rated: NR
Runtime: 1 hr. 40 min.
Genres: Action/Adventure, Animated, Art House/Foreign
Director:Takeshi Koike
Cast:Takuya KimuraYu AoiDaisuke GouriIkki Todoroki,Kanji TsudaFull cast + crew

Verdict: Buy Me
Available On: Blu-ray, DVD
Additional Thoughts: Redline is the best new movie you've never heard of. Even if you're the type of person who has written off anime entirely, you absolutely must see this movie. It will turn your brain inside out, inject ecstasy right into your eardrums, and make you instantly realize why the genre can push boundaries live-action simply cannot. Seriously, it's the most purely entertaining movie to come around in years and it's a godsend that it's now finally on Blu-ray in the US.

Undocumented (IFC Films)
Release Date: Sep 09, 2011
Rated: NR
Genres: Horror
Director: Chris Peckover
Cast: Alona Tal, Scott Mechlowicz, Kevin Weisman, Nicholas Tucci, Peter Stormare

Verdict: Rent Me
Available On: DVD
Additional Thoughts: It's a curious thing to say, but Undocumented is a horror movie that deserved way more controversy than it actually received. For some reason this movie, which is about a group of college kids attempting to document what it's like to illegally enter the US (though it is not a found footage movie), flew under most people's radar. I suppose the silver lining there is it'll feel like even more of a gut punch once you finally do see it. If you're a genre who has been looking for a button-pushing indie, do give this a rent.

Good Morning, Vietnam (Touchstone)
Release Date: Dec 23, 1987
Rated: R
Runtime: 2 hr. 1 min.
Genres: Comedy
Director:Barry Levinson
Cast:Robin WilliamsForest WhitakerChintara SukapatanaBruno KirbyJ.T. WalshFull cast + crew

Verdict: Rent Me
Available On: Blu-ray
Additional Thoughts: It's surprising how well this film has aged, which is pure testament to the film's stars and script. Good Morning, Vietnam isn't like most war movies in that it's not about taking sides (though obviously it does), rather it's about how psychologically frustrating the military complex is, especially if you're living inside it.
