New 'Star Wars' Rumors: Han Solo and Boba Fett Rival Movie? An Entire Obi-Wan Trilogy?

Jun 03, 2015

June the third be with you?

With all the Star Wars rumors dropping today, you'd think we were back on May 4, when the accepted "Star Wars Day" brought official glimpses at The Force Awakens characters and official updates on the second Star Wars Anthology movie, among other things. The key there is those were official bits and today's are not. So, take them with a grain of salt off your Mos Eisley margarita.

Is there a new director attached to that second Star Wars Anthology movie yet?

With the departure of Josh Trank, for whatever the reasons, a job in the Star Wars franchise opened up. So far no official name has signed on to the spin-off installment, which we know is a Boba Fett origin story of some kind, but the guys at Schmoes Know hear that it might be either Jon Favreau or Matthew Vaughn.

Any other updates on what that movie will be about?

Schmoes Know also shares the rumor that Han Solo will be as much of a major character as Boba Fett, with the movie focused on the smuggler and bounty hunter's conflict as it transpired before we meet them in A New Hope. Additionally, we could also see Chewbacca, Lando Calrissian and the bounty hunter Bossk show up. The angle will be that it's a kind of space Western.

But will Han Solo still get his very own, umm, solo movie?

It doesn't sound like it at the moment, but that could be enough. If not, then apparently you should at least be reading the new Star Wars comics, where a big whopper of a background item on Solo was revealed this week. We won't spoil it here, but you can head over to /Film for that shocker

So which character will the next Anthology movie focus on?

Again, these are unofficial reports, but the third Anthology is expected to either be a Mace Windu or Yoda movie -- or both, with a spiritual theme to it. This standalone installment, likely out in 2020, is also possibly the last of the Anthology movies.

What about Obi-Wan Kenobi?

In a different post at Schmoes Know, rumor has it that Ewan McGregor is in talks with Disney for something big and the speculation is that it's Star Wars related. Some theories have had it that he'll appear in other movies, whether as a Force ghost in the sequels or some part in one or more Anthology movie (he should be in the Windu and Yoda movie if that happens). But there's also rumor that McGregor as Obi-Wan will get a solo movie or even a whole trilogy.

Either way, we could probably expect to see more of Joel Edgerton, who has become a bigger star since appearing in the prequels, as Uncle Owen. And that would mean seeing a little Luke Skywalker, too.
