New 'Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation' Trailer Tries To Drown Tom Cruise

The Mission: Impossible movies are ostensibly about a team of elite special agents who work for the Impossible Missions Force agency to thwart threats to America and its interests worldwide. Funny thing is, though, we're now five movies into the franchise and so far the only missions the IMF ever seem to pull off involve them thwarting people inside the US government who want to shut them down.

That seems to also be the plot in this July's Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation from Jack Reacher director Christopher McQuarrie, which finds the US once again trying to shut down Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his team (Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Jeremy Renner, and now Rebecca Ferguson). CIA honcho Alec Baldwin really wants to do a better job than the last few CIA goons who tried, though, so he tasks a whole separate squad of elite agents, dubbed the Anti-IMF, to take them out.

Going off this new trailer, Cruise is in top stunt form yet again, zooming around on motorcycles, jumping off whatever he can jump off, and even hitching a ride on the outside of a plane so that he can presumably reach an even higher point to jump. There's comedy and intrigue and tons of spectacle. The whole thing does look pretty incredible.

We're just wondering at what point someone in the US government will realize "Hey, this Ethan Hunt guy is pretty good. Maybe we should actually use him instead of keep trying to get rid of him."

Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation hits theaters on July 31, 2015.
