Edge of Tomorrow

Update 3/25/14: A new Edge of Tomorrow trailer has hit online, and we've embedded it below:

Previously 12/11/13: Nobody does big-budget sci-fi quite like Tom Cruise. He hasn't even done a ton of them in his career, but the ones he has done have all sealed his fate as a great presence to watch using crazy technology or fighting alien forces. Even though he's a superstar, there's still something so casual and cool about Cruise, which makes the spectacle side of his films stand out all the more. His personality doesn't eclipse the visual effects or out-of-this-world stories, which is a quality you want in movies like War of the Worlds and Minority Report.

His latest is Edge of Tomorrow (previously called All You Need Is Kill), where he stars alongside Emily Blunt in a high-concept plot that we're just going to let the official synopsis handle:

The epic action of Edge of Tomorrow unfolds in a near future in which an alien race has hit the Earth in an unrelenting assault, unbeatable by any military unit in the world. Major William Cage (Cruise) is an officer who has never seen a day of combat when he is unceremoniously dropped into what amounts to a suicide mission. Killed within minutes, Cage now finds himself inexplicably thrown into a time loop forcing him to live out the same brutal combat over and over, fighting and dying again...and again. But with each battle, Cage becomes able to engage the adversaries with increasing skill, alongside Special Forces warrior Rita Vrataski (Blunt). And, as Cage and Rita take the fight to the aliens, each repeated encounter gets them one step closer to defeating the enemy.

That's a pretty great setup if you ask us, and the trailer looks like it absolutely delivers on the strangeness of living a repeat life as a soldier fighting an overwhelming alien force. We do wonder if it will get a little repetitive seeing Cruise on the same battlefield fighting the same fight over and over, but we're guessing those badass mech suits are going to take our mind off of that.

What do you think?

Edge of Tomorrow hits theaters June 6, 2014.
