Netflix Nabs More Big-Screen Talent: Watch the First Trailers for 'The Get Down' and 'The Crown'

Jan 06, 2016

Netflix continues to rise as a major media outlet, with its Watch Instantly streaming service expanding to 130 more countries this week. This comes as the company also announced it will be introducing 600 hours of original programming in 2016, almost double what they put out last year.

Additionally, during a CES keynote address, chief content officer Ted Sarandos revealed that of the 2015 slate, the Adam Sandler-led Western comedy The Ridiculous Six was the most-watched movie on Netflix ever. That includes licensed titles as well as original premieres.

Fortunately, for now at least, they won't be limiting themselves to releasing only similarly low-brow entertainment. As you can see by the following two trailers for upcoming original series, they've actually got some exciting prestige items from great filmmakers in the pipeline.

One is a show from Peter Morgan, the Oscar-nominated writer of The Queen. Titled The Crown and based on his play The Audience, it is also an Elizabeth II biopic, this time focused on her coronation. Claire Foy (Anne Bolyn on Wolf Hall) portrays the young queen, Matt Smith (Doctor Who) is her husband, Prince Philip, and John Lithgow plays Winston Churchill.

The other, slightly less high-brow series, The Get Down, is from Australian filmmaker Baz Luhrman, and of course it's a musical drama. What might be surprising to fans of his work is that it's about teens growing up in the South Bronx in the 1970s. Among its ensemble cast is Jimmy Smits, Jaden Smith, Giancarlo Esposito, Shameik Moore (Dope) and Mamoudou Athie, who portrays real life hip-hop legend Grandmaster Flash.
