Let's talk about the elephant in the room before you watch the below video of a battle between Superman and Hulk animated by Michael Habjan (during time off from his day job, so don't get nasty about the sketchy areas). Superman bores most geeks to tears. For many, he's a product of his time — and he hasn't truly been popular in the past decade. (This writer wanted to say something ridiculous like 50 years, but our own John Gholson advised that the Death of Superman comic storyline was an important time for the caped hero in the '90s.) He's outwardly plain, but actually quite excessive if you consider his abilities (super strength, flying, laser beam death stare, x-ray vision … and the list goes on). The dramatic tension in any Superman story is flat, because there's never any chance of him really losing. So basically, he's overpowered and pretty boring.
Habjan has ignored all that, however, and paired the Man of Steel with Hulk for a showdown that is nicely choreographed and pretty nifty to watch. It may be sadistic of us, but we kept hoping to see Superman really get crushed by the giant — and he does take a few decent hits. Check it out for yourself below, where we've also posted part one — for the completists — that features a rougher animation style. Habjan has also animated The Big Lebowski and other cult faves, which you can see on his YouTube channel.
