Lots of nerd-friendly movie news making the rounds today, so let’s just get to it.
First footage from the set of Avengers: Age of Ultron
After what feels like an eternity of hype and buildup, Joss Whedon is finally hard at work shooting Avengers: Age of Ultron – the coup de grace of Marvel’s Phase Two plan of cinematic dominance -- and we’ve got the video proof!
Whedon and the technical crew headed to Johannesburg, South Africa last week to shoot an extensive action sequence that will reportedly make up the first 10 minutes of the highly anticipated sequel. Naturally, South African citizens were on hand with cell phone cameras ready to capture the action for your enjoyment.
Based on the footage, it appears as though the film is ready to open with Hulk going on a massive rampage through the city. Cars go flying, debris is everywhere, and you can all but hear the scream of “Hulk smash!” while watching the action.
Hulk doesn’t make an official cameo, although he has a stunt-head stand-in that’s carried around by two crew members in the second video. If this is a sign of what’s to come, I think it’s safe to say that Age of Ultron will certainly start with a bang. [via /Film]
Star Wars: Episode VII casting rumor update
Speaking of an eternity of hype and buildup, we’ve got another casting rumor for J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars: Episode VII that’s been making the rounds. As always, until we get some sort of official confirmation from Disney or the LucasFilm folks, consider this more fiction than fact.
According to two Harry Knowles sources, actor Jack Reynor is the latest thespian linked to the high-profile project. Knowles sources have no idea who the actor would play in the continuation of one of the most beloved movie sagas in cinematic history, but according to them he’s very much attached to the project.
If this pans out, it’s quite the coup for Reynor – who’s already involved in the upcoming Transformers: Age of Extinction (which is clearly a different age than the Age of Ultron -- we're not sure which age comes first). This could potentially give the young actor a prominent role in two huge franchises, thereby making him an attractive option for even more high-paying gigs.
The key phrase there is "if this pans out." Rumors are constantly flying around Episode VII like X-wing fighters buzzing the Death Star. We’ll just have to wait and see where this one goes. [via Cinemablend]
Check out this rockin’ Battle FX Star Lord action figure from Guardians of the Galaxy
Finally, we wrap up this installment of nerd-friendly news with an awesome action figure from the upcoming Marvel film Guardians of the Galaxy.
The new figure was on display at Toy Fair 2014, and it features various phrases from Chris Pratt’s character Star Lord. But the best part is that some of the sounds include cheesy '80s synth pop, because the character is a child of the '80s and listens to '80s music throughout the movie. A 2014 action figure that blares cheesy '80s music? Sign us up!
No word on when this figure will actually be in stores, but expect it as part of the major merchandising blitz leading up to the film’s release on August 1. [via YouTube]
