Nerd Watch: Check Out These Awesome Neon Movie Ads

Jun 13, 2011

The art and originality behind movie advertisements has really gone downhill in recent years, with more and more movie posters looking like generic, photoshopped rip-offs of other, older movie posters. Sure you have your geeky Mondo posters and your occasional studio-generated winner, but these days it's hard not to want to see some new, cool creative creations when it comes to our movie ads. Like the stuff being put out by Mr. Whaite, who's been creating these fantastic neon movie ads over on his tumblr page. Start throwing these up in the hallways of our cineplex's and you'll grab more of our attention, that's for sure.

Here's how Mr. Whaite introduces his fantastic neon movie ads: "I love neon signs - they’re hypnotic, sexy, sleazy and tacky all at the same time - and I’ve always thought it would be cool if cinemas used them to advertise films. So with that in mind, I thought I'd have a go at designing some animated Movie Neon."

Check out his creations below and let us know your favorite.

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s Superman in neon.

A neon poster for Return of the Jedi.
As a kid, I assumed the returning Jedi was Luke, but it eventually dawned on me that the title could also refer to Darth Vader - turning against the dark side and destroying the Emperor. In this scene, he has to make the choice between good and evil.
C’mon Vader, make your mind up!

There are so many classic scenes in The Empire Strikes Back - which one to choose when designing a neon poster?
The Luke/Vader fight seems like an obvious choice, but I was always impressed by the AT-AT Walkers - great stop-motion animation and an ideal cyclic motion for neon. Also, it’s a suitable image to illustrate the Empire ‘striking back’.

“Help me Obi-Wan Kenobi, you’re my only hope.”
An animated neon poster for the original Star Wars film - Episode IV: A New Hope. This is the key moment when Luke discovers his call to adventure and the hero’s journey begins.

The world famous, Jack Rabbit Slims Twist Contest - in neon. (Just be thankful that I didn’t animate the Gimp scene.)

My first attempt is Ghostbusters - an obvious choice really, particulary as neon featured heavily in the video for Ray Parker Jr’s single… http://youtu.be/KvkKX035484
