This summer's Neighborhood Watch already has a lot on its side. Director Akiva Schaffer's previous film, Hot Rod, is one of the most underrated comedies of the past several years. The flick is a flat-out riot, and teaming Schaffer with writers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg (Superbad) just feels like the perfect comedic match. Apart from that, we have a film with a cast reuniting Dodgeball stars Ben Stiller and Vince Vaughn, as well as Jonah Hill, Billy Crudup, Will Forte, Richard Ayoade, Doug Jones, Rosemarie DeWitt and more. This thing is literally stacked with funny people. Tack on a prime summer release date of July 27th -- right after The Dark Knight Rises drops its box office nuclear weapon on the world -- and this ensemble comedy about a bunch of guys who form a neighborhood watch group (only to wind up fighting aliens) could ... go ... all ... the ... way.
The first teaser (which just debuted via IMDb) is short and light and doesn't reveal much of anything. The little exchange at the end is funny, and we expect the film to work off humor that revolves around these guys having no idea what they're doing. Our only question right now is the rating. All of these folks behind the camera and in front of the camera are at their best when they're allowed to be dirty. But will the big summer release and popular cast mean a PG-13? We hope not. We hope this is an R-rated romp.
