The Hobbit

The Hobbit: Director Peter Jackson has been sharing his thoughts on the final day of shooting The Hobbit films, live-blogging and posting photos. There is something poignant and almost forlorn, for example, about a shot with the characters known as "Big Richard, Medium Richard and Little Richard" staring into a green screen that will be replaced by digitally created graphics in the final film, while others simply look like a lot of fun. The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug will arrive in theaters on December 13. Frankenstein: James McAvoy, who took on the challenge of playing a younger version of Charles Xavier in X-Men: First Class and will reprise the role in X-Men: Days of Future Past, will now face the daunting task of bringing something new to the role of an even more famous scientist. McAvoy will star as the titular character in Frankenstein, opposite Daniel Radcliffe as Igor. Paul McGuigan will direct; the movie is due to open on October 17, 2014. [Deadline]

The Butterfly Effect: Way back in 2004, Ashton Kutcher starred in The Butterfly Effect as a young man who figured out how to recapture lost memories and thus alter his life. The movie spawned two direct-to-DVD sequels, and now it's time for a reboot. Eric Bress, who cowrote and codirected the original, has been hired to write a new screenplay. No word yet on whether Kutcher or costar Amy Smart might be lured back. [Variety]

Cold Comes the Night Trailer: Don't get Bryan Cranston mad! He is absolutely chilling as a Russian criminal who wants his money back from single mom Alice Eve in the first trailer for Cold Comes the Night. She's desperate to provide for her little girl, and so made the mistake of grabbing a bag full of cash, but now she has to contend with Cranston. The movie is due out in the U.K. on September 20 and has just been acquired by Sony for the U.S. Here's hoping we don't have to wait too long to see it. [Total Film]
