The Hobbit

The Hobbit: It's not the final, final good-bye, but Peter Jackson is getting ready to say good-bye to Gandalf and the rest of the gang. He has assembled the troops for "an intense few weeks" of pick-up shots for the remaining film(s) in The Hobbit trilogy, including Ian McKellen in full costume as Gandalf. The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is due in theaters on December 13, with The Hobbit: There and Back Again due in December 2014. [Peter Jackson on Facebook]

Angry Birds: The big-screen version of wildly popular mobile game app Angry Birds is moving forward with the hiring of screenwriter Jon Vitti, cowriter of The Simpsons Movie and Alvin and the Chipmunks, as well as The Simpsons TV series, King of the Hill and others. That appears to signal that a light-hearted treatment is intended. A tentative release date of July 1, 2016 has also been staked out. [Variety]

Pacific Rim TV Spot: It's a big-budget, summer blockbuster featuring giant robots fighting giant creatures known as kaiju, so how does Pacific Rim look when it's all squeezed down into 30 seconds and sized for your television? The first TV spot answers: pretty darn good -- it makes us want to see more! The movie will be in full size at your local multiplex on July 12. [Pacific Rim on Facebook via The Playlist]

The Wolverine Trailer: From everything we've seen so far, James Mangold's The Wolverine is shaping up as a darker, more intense movie than its predecessor, following Marvel's superhero as he returns to Japan on a very personal odyssey. Check out the newest trailer below and see if you agree. Hugh Jackman stars; the movie will slash its way into theaters on July 26. [The Wolverine on YouTube]
