Pacific Rim

Pacific Rim: Monsters rise up out of the sea in Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim, prompting mankind to respond by creating giant robots to do battle with them. In a new image, however, the focus is on humans, as Idris Elba (Thor) talks to Rinko Kikuchi (Babel) in what looks like the control room for the robots, known as Jaegers. The movie is due out on July 12, 2013. [Lebanese Movie Guide via Coming Soon]

Quentin Tarantino: With Django Unchained in theaters, Quentin Tarantino has been working on the next movie he wants to make -- and he says it may be the third in a trilogy that began with Inglourious Basterds. The story would follow a group of black soldiers during World War II who go “on an Apache warpath” after being unfairly treated by the military. Tarantino referred to it as Killing Crow “or something like that,” and says he’s finished about half the script. [The Root via Movieline]

Paul Thomas Anderson: We heard previously that writer-director Paul Thomas Anderson has been working on his next project, an adaptation of Thomas Pynchon’s Inherent Vice, and now new details have emerged. The 2009 novel would be the first of the reclusive writer’s works to hit the big screen; its lead character is a billionaire real estate developer in late 1960s Los Angeles. Anderson says his work as screenwriter is “more secretarial,” suggesting he is being extremely faithful to the novel. He hopes to start production on the movie in 2013. [New York Times]

Hong Kong Phooey Test Footage: Two classic Warner Bros. cartoon characters come to life in test footage posted online for Hong Kong Phooey (with the voice of Eddie Murphy?) and Marvin the Martian. The footage combines live action with animation. [Cartoon Brew / Bleeding Cool]
