Movie News: Michelle MacLaren to Direct Chris Pratt's 'Cowboy Ninja Viking'; SXSW to Open with 'A Quiet Place'

Cowboy Ninja Viking: Michelle MacLaren (Game of Thrones; The Deuce, above) will direct Cowboy Ninja Viking. Chris Pratt will star as an assassin with a multiple-personality disorder in the big-screen adaptation of a comic book series created by A.J. Lieberman and Riley Rossmo. A Quiet Place

SXSW: This year's South by Southwest Film Festival (SXSW) will kick off on March 9; A Quiet Place, a thriller starring Emily Blunt (above) and directed by John Krasinski, will be the opening night presentation. Eight of the ten features in the Narrative Feature Competition were directed or codirected by women, including Laura Steinel's Family, starring Taylor Schilling (Orange Is the New Black). Also on offer: an advance look at Jordan Peele's new TV show The Last O.G., starring Tracy Morgan and Tiffany Haddish, which debuts on TBS in April. [Indiewire]

 

Wish I Was Here

Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile: Jim Parsons (Wish I Was Here, above) is the latest to join the cast of Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile. Zac Efron will star as serial killer Ted Bundy, who eventually confessed to murdering 30 people in the 1970s. The film will be told from the perspective of Bundy's longtime girlfriend (Lily Collins). Kaya Scodelario will play Bundy's wife; Parsons will play the lead prosecutor in a legal case against him. [The Wrap]

Ready Player One TV Spot: A new television spot for Steven Spielberg's Ready Player One showcases some of the spectacular footage on display, as players of a virtual-reality game compete to win a fortune.
