Movie News: Meryl Streep Joins 'Big Little Lies'; Watch New 'Pacific Rim: Uprising' Trailer

Big Little Lies: Meryl Streep, who just earned her 21st Academy Award nomination for her sterling performance in The Post (above), will appear in the second season of HBO's Big Little Lies. She will play a concerned grandmother who arrives in town after the death of her son. The cast will again be led by Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman; Shailene Woodley and Laura Dern are also expected to reprise their roles. Andrea Arnold (American Honey) will direct all seven new episodes that are planned for the acclaimed series. [Deadline]


The Cat in the Hat

The Cat in the Hat: An animated version of the venerable children's classic The Cat in the Hat is on its way from Warner Animation Group and Dr. Seuss Enterprise Lp. The two companies are planning a series of animated feature films based on characters and stories created by Dr. Seuss (aka Theodor Geisel). A live-action version of The Cat in the Hat, starring Mike Myers (above), was released in 2003. [Deadline]


A Bad Moms Christmas

Revenge Wedding: Cheryl Hines, primarily known as an actress (HBO's Curb Your Enthusiasm; A Bad Moms Christmas, above with Kristen Bell), will direct Revenge Wedding. The comedy will follow a woman who learns that her fiancé is cheating on her and decides to exact revenge by transforming their impending wedding into a series of chaotic events for him. Hines previously directed the crime comedy Serious Moonlight. [The Wrap]


Pacific Rim: Uprising

Pacific Rim: Uprising Trailer: In an exciting new trailer for the sequel Pacific Rim: Uprising, John Boyega plays the son of a character (Idris Elba) in the original who must lead a new generation of giant-robot pilots into battle against a new giant-monster threat. The action adventure also stars Tian Jing and Scott Eastwood; it opens in theaters on March 23. [Movieclips]
