Movie News: Mel Gibson to Star in a Spy Movie; 'Fast and Furious' Director Tapped for 'Hot Wheels'

Sep 29, 2016

Every Other Weekend: Mel Gibson is continuing his attempted comeback by starring in the indie action-adventure spy film Every Other Weekend playing a secret agent whose son, an IT guy for the CIA, and grandson get mixed up in a dangerous plot. French filmmaker Benjamin Rocher (The Horde) is directing, and shooting begins later this year. [THR]

Hot Wheels: If the Fast and Furious movies are a little too grown-up for your kids, then Hot Wheels might be a perfect substitute. The presumed family film, based on the little toy cars, even just tapped director Justin Lin, who helmed three of the Fast and Furious installments and then this year's Star Trek Beyond. He will also produce the feature, which is still in early stages of development. [THR]

The Lunch Witch: Clay Kaytis, a former Disney animator who worked on Frozen, recently made his directorial debut as part of the duo at the helm of The Angry Birds Movie. Now he's making his live-action directorial debut with an adaptation of the YA novel The Lunch Witch, about a witch who becomes a school lunch lady and befriends a shy little girl. This, too, is in early development stages and has no script yet. [Deadline]

Dog Eat Dog Trailer: Nicolas Cage is up to his old tricks of kidnapping babies in the first trailer for Dog Eat Dog. Directed by Paul Schrader and featuring the filmmaker's first acting work, the crime thriller stars Cage and Willem Dafoe as a couple of ex-cons hired by one mobster to steal the kid of his rival. That appears to be where comparisons to Raising Arizona end. See the movie in theaters on November 4 or online starting November 11. [Movieclips]
