How the Grinch Stole Christmas

How The Grinch Stole Christmas: Jim Carrey redefined the title character in Ron Howard’s version of the Dr. Seuss tale back in 2000, but it’s time for a new version of How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Pete Cardeland, a veteran maker of music videos and TV commercials, has been set to make his directorial debut with an animated, 3D take on the beloved 1957 book. A 1966 animated version, directed by the immortal Chuck Jones, played frequently on television; that one featured the voice of Boris Karloff as the Grinch. [The Wrap]

Joe: Nicolas Cage has undertaken a flurry of sometimes bewildering roles over the past few years, but the upcoming Joe, directed by David Gordon Green (Pineapple Express) sounds like one of the good ones. He plays an ex-convict who tries to protect a young man (Tye Sheridan) in his small Texas town. The first image presents Cage in “very serious, bearded” mode. [Thompson on Hollywood]

Star Wars: Stuart Freeborn, a movie makeup artist whose credits stretched over six decades, passed away earlier this week at the age of 98. He is best known as the creator behind Yoda, Chewbacca and Jabba the Hutt in the original Star Wars films. His career began in the 1930s, applying makeup to the likes of Marlene Dietrich, Vivian Leigh and later for Alec Guiness, and he did memorable work with Stanley Kubrick on Dr. Strangelove (Peter Sellers' multiple characters) and 2001: A Space Odyssey (the apes in the opening sequence). Leviathan Trailer: Critically acclaimed at every stop on the film festival circuit, the documentary Leviathan explores the world of commercial fishing off the coast of New England. It’s described as capturing “the harsh, unforgiving world of the fishermen in starkly haunting, yet beautiful detail.” The trailer will either make you want to go to sea or never eat fish again. The movie opens in theaters on March 1. [Apple via First Showing]
