Sherlock

From Detective to Slave Owner: Hot off the recently-concluded second season of British TV series Sherlock (and a sterling supporting role in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy), Benedict Cumberbatch (above) is already set to play the villain in Star Trek 2, and he’s joined the cast of another anticipated project as well: Shame director Steve McQueen’s 12 Years a Slave. The historical drama stars Michael Fassbender, Brad Pitt, and Chiwetel Ejiofor; Cumberbatch will play a plantation owner. [Showblitz]

Too Much Talking: Sigh. It’s still not official, but the latest word is that Kick-Ass stars Aaron Johnson, Chloe Moretz, and Christopher Mintz-Plasse are “nearly done” with their deals to star in Kick-Ass 2, the sequel. In the arcane world of motion picture contract negotiations, that means anything could happen between now and when shooting is scheduled to begin in September. Also mentioned: a possible cameo role for Nicolas Cage, which might surprise those who saw the first film. [Deadline]

Betting on Death: Yesterday we presented a picture of a battered Ryan Gosling from the upcoming Only God Forgives, his reunion with Drive director Nicolas Winding Refn. After that, Refn is attached to a remake of Logan’s Run as well as a horror movie with Drive's Carey Mulligan. Now he’s in talks to add an adaptation of graphic novel Button Man: The Killing Game to his pile of projects. The source material features retired soldiers who fight to the death for (presumably) bored rich people who've seen too many B-movies with similar plots; we hope this one has a fresh twist of some kind. Bike or Die: When we say “JGL,” we hope you think Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who, in addition to his supporting role in next month’s The Dark Knight Rises, also has an upcoming star turn as a NYC bicycle messenger in the thriller Premium Rush, which is due out in August and has a fab new trailer.
