Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted

3D vs 3D: In the battle of 3D family fare vs. 3D adult viewing, the kids won. Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted took home an estimated $60.35 million over the weekend, decisively edging out Prometheus at $50 million, which is still a very good total for an R-rated action flick. Snow White and the Huntsman dropped 59% (more than usual) and ended up with $23 million. In limited release (96 screens), Wes Anderson's Moonrise Kingdom cracked the top 10, earning a very respectable $1.58 million. [Box Office Mojo]

Hollywood Wins on Broadway: The Broadway stage production “Once,” based on the 2006 feature film about a romance between two musicians, won the Tony Award for Best Musical last night. The original film won an Academy Award for Best Song (“Falling Slowly”). Other film-related winners included Mike Nichols for Best Direction of a Play for “Death of a Salesman” and Scott Rudin (The Social Network) for his role in producing “Salesman,” which won for Best Revival. From Chuck to Thor: TV taketh away, and TV may giveth back. With Josh Dallas unable to reprise his role in Thor 2 due to his commitment to TV series Once Upon a Time, Zachary Levi, who had to bow out of Thor due to his obligations for the now-cancelled TV show Chuck, may be back in. Levi would play Fandral, one of the Warriors Three; production on Thor 2 aims to begin next month. [The Hollywood Reporter]

Remake Dread: There’s simplicity, there’s ultra-simplicity, and then there’s the first poster for Dredd, the new big-screen version of the venerable Brit comic book Judge Dredd starring Karl Urban, which redefines “simple.” The movie is due out in September. [JoBlo]
