Kong: Skull Island: John Goodman, who really doesn't do enough big blockbuster movies, has joined the cast of the King Kong reboot Kong: Skull Island. The Arachnophobia star is playing a government official named Randa who leads the expedition to the titular island, joined by Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson and John C. Reilly. Here's hoping he gets to wrestle a giant spider in the movie, which recently jumped from Universal to Warner Bros., where it will lead into a crossover with Godzilla. [Deadline]

Furious 8: Vin Diesel took to social media to clear up last week's rumors about the next Fast & Furious installment. "My producing partner Neal would love for me to just sign off on a director," he wrote, "but this is too special a franchise, so these matters have to be very carefully handled. To be clear, NO ONE has been offered to helm Fast 8 yet... let alone seen a script." That being the actual title is uncertain, but Diesel did confirm another bit of info for the franchise, that it's to kick off "one last Trilogy to end the saga." [Facebook]

Maniac Cop: Word came from producer Nicolas Winding Refn that John Hyams (Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning) is directing the Maniac Cop remake (or prequel?). And then Hyams confirmed on Twitter, calling it "a tremendous opportunity ... the follow up movie I've been waiting for."  He also called the script, by Ed Brubaker, "phenomenal." [Twitch]

The Assassin Trailer: The first U.S. trailer has arrived for the highly acclaimed new film from Taiwanese master Hou Hsiao-hsien. The Assassin won the filmmaker an award for best director at Cannes and is currently wowing more festival audiences this fall. The ancient China-set martial arts drama hits theaters in limited release on October 16.
