Movie News: John Cena Joins 'Transformers' Spin-off 'Bumblebee'; Director Snared for Dwayne Johnson's 'Jungle Cruise'

Bumblebee: John Cena (Trainwreck, above) has joined the cast of Bumblebee, the first spin-off from the Transformers franchise. Hailee Steinfeld stars as a young woman in 1987 California, trying to find her place in the world; she discovers the battle-scarred and broken Bumblebee and soon learns he is not an ordinary little yellow car. Pamela Adlon, Stephen Schneider and Jorge Lendeborg Jr. also star; the movie will open on December 21, 2018. [THR]


The Shallows

Jungle Cruise: Jaume Collet-Serra (The Shallows, above with Blake Lively) will direct Disney's action-adventure movie Jungle Cruise, inspired by the theme park attraction. Dwayne Johnson is set to star; filming is expected to begin next spring. Collet-Serra was recently mentioned as the front-runner to helm Suicide Squad 2, but he's now dropped out of consideration for that project. [Deadline]


Doctor Strange

Doctor Doom: Writer/director Noah Hawley (TV's Legion) recently announced that he's developing a new movie featuring the villainous Fantastic Four character Doctor Doom. Mads Mikkelsen (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story; Doctor Strange, above), asked if he would be interested in playing the character, says: "It’s always interesting. They are experimenting with doing some of the villain’s stories as well. Let’s see if they do that. … We’ll see when that day comes.” [ScreenGeek]
