The Master

Inherent Vice: Joaquin Phoenix is in talks to replace Robert Downey Jr. in Paul Thomas Anderson’s Inherent Vice. The source material is Thomas Pynchon’s novel, described by one reviewer as “a slightly spoofy take on hard-boiled crime fiction,” which follows a counterculture private detective in circa-1970 California. Divergent: Shailene Woodley (The Descendants) is already set to star in Divergent, the big-screen adaptation of Veronica Roth’s popular young adult novel, and now Kate Winslet is in talks to join the cast. It’s not certain what role she would play, though it’s thought she might portray a villainous character; the movie is scheduled for release in March 2014. []

Silver Vase, Iron Knight: More than 12 years after Ang Lee’s martial arts masterpiece Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon became the highest-grossing foreign-language movie in the U.S., a sequel is finally on its way. John Fusco (The Forbidden Kingdom) has completed a screenplay, based on the fifth in a series of novels by Wang Dulu, but Lee will not be involved, and it’s not yet known if any of the stars from the original will return. Ronny Yu (Fearless, Freddy vs. Jason) is in talks to direct. [Deadline]

Upside Down Trailer: Kirsten Dunst and Jim Sturgess star in Upside Down, a romance that takes place in an “alternate reality where two worlds exist one above the other like mirror opposites,” as our own Alison Nastasi described it. A visually gorgeous new trailer does its best to explain the freaky concept; the movie opens on March 15. [Yahoo! Movies]
