Movie News: Jason Statham in 'Parker' Poster; 'Hunger Games: Mockingjay' Gets a Writer; Sweet 'The First Time' Trailer

Parker: Mystery writer Donald E. Westlake created the iconic Parker, a wily, principled career criminal who’s been portrayed on-screen by everyone from Lee Marvin to Mel Gibson. Jason Statham will take on the titular role in Parker, due out on January 25, but, unfortunately, the first poster does nothing to hint that the movie will be anything other than a generic action movie. Jennifer Lopez, Nick Nolte and Michael Chiklis also star; Taylor Hackford (Ray) directs. [IGN]

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay: An award-winning writer has been hired to write the two-part finale of The Hunger Games. Danny Strong, who just picked up an Emmy for scripting political drama Game Change for HBO, will take on the task of transforming Suzanne Collins’ book into two films, due in theaters on November 21, 2014 and November 20, 2015. Strong is an actor who has become increasingly busy as a writer, working on projects such as The Lost Symbol and The Butler. [Variety]

The Stranger: Who would have the nerve to remake a film by Orson Welles? The Stranger (1946) may not have the exalted pedigree of Citizen Kane, The Magnificent Ambersons or Touch of Evil, but it’s still darn near perfect, with great performances by Edward G. Robinson as a Nazi hunter on the trail of a war criminal and Welles as a professor in hiding. Joseph Ruben (Sleeping with the Enemy) will direct a new version in which a reformed serial killer is tempted to return to his murdering ways by his former partner in crime. [The Hollywood Reporter]

The First Time Trailer: Sweet coming-of-age movies never go out of style, and the next one on the release schedule is The First Time, due out on October 19. Jonathan Kasdan directs a young cast, toplined by Dylan O’Brien and Britt Robertson as high school students who spend their first weekend together. [Yahoo! Movies]
