The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey -- Gandalf at The Embassy Theater, Wellington, New Zealand

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey: As the December 14 release date draws closer for the first installment of Peter Jackson’s new trilogy, promotional displays in his native New Zealand are getting crazy! First we saw an installation at the Wellington Airport featuring Gollum, and now a sculpture of Gandalf (played by Ian McKellen in the movie) takes center stage in a display for The Embassy Theater in Wellington, where the movie’s world premiere will be held on November 28. Memphis: Director Paul Greengrass (The Bourne Ultimatum) and powerhouse producer Scott Rudin (The Social Network) want to make a movie titled Memphis about the final days of Martin Luther King Jr. The project foundered previously after Universal Pictures decided not to move forward. Independent financing issues arose, but the money may be coming together in time for Greengrass to make Memphis his next film. Once that’s in place, the casting process can begin. [Deadline]

Murderous Movie Theater Plans Averted: Late last week, a 20-year-old man bought two assault rifles, 400 rounds of ammunition, and tickets to a screening of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn -- Part 2 in Bolivar, Missouri. After his mother contacted authorities, he agreed to be interviewed at a police station on Friday, where he eventually confessed that he had purchased the guns “with the intent of shooting people at the theater” last night (Sunday). He was charged with first-degree assault, making a terroristic threat, and armed criminal action. [News-Leader]

Now You See Me Trailer: An elite team of illusionists, led by Jesse Eisenberg and Woody Harrelson, rob banks and then distribute the profits to downtrodden audience members, incurring the wrath of the FBI -- in the person of Mark Raffalo -- and inspiring the reunion of Morgan Freeman and Michael Caine (from Christopher Nolan's Batman movies) in Now You See Me, due in theaters on June 7, 2013.
