A Most Wanted Man

A Most Wanted Man: Photographer and music video director Anton Corbijn made his stylish feature debut with The American, starring George Clooney, and he’s continuing on that path with A Most Wanted Man, a spy thriller starring Philip Seymour Hoffman and Rachel McAdams. BAFTA: Argo continued its impressive run on the awards circuit, winning Best Picture and Best Director (for Ben Affleck) awards from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) yesterday. As expected, Daniel Day-Lewis took home the prize for Best Actor in Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln and Anne Hathaway won as Best Supporting Actress for her musical turn in Les Miserables. In minor surprises, Emmanuelle Riva, 85, became the oldest award winner for her lead performance in Michael Haneke’s Amour, and Christoph Waltz was awarded Best Supporting Actor for Django Unchained. Annie: With Willow Smith out of the running for the title role in the upcoming Jay Z-produced version of Annie, will the Academy Award-nominated Quvenzhane Wallis take her place? The young actress, all of nine years of age, made a splash in the critically acclaimed indie drama Beasts of the Southern Wild, and is now under consideration to star in the musical Annie. Director Will Gluck (Easy A) is writing a new draft of the screenplay, so casting decisions may have to wait a while. []

Oz: The Great and Powerful Trailer: A new trailer for Oz: The Great and Powerful provides a great introduction to the detailed fantasy world created by director Sam Raimi. James Franco stars, with Michelle Williams, Rachel Weisz and Mila Kunis as witches who will help decide his fate in the magical land. The movie will open wide on March 8. [The Film Stage]
